There We Were, In A Frame, is the debut EP from Glasgow artist, ASTER. Self-produced while in lockdown and taking inspiration from artists such as Half Waif, Perfume Genius and Big Thief, There We Were, In A Frame is an adroit achievement in painting with sound. Written at the tail end of a relationship, and re-assessed during the production process months later, this EP presents two distinct points of departure: at first, the instinctive reactionary outpourings flourish; then, through reflection, acceptance and resolve emerge.
The opening track Unaware Bliss (released as a single 16 September 2020) is a tone-setter. The track juxtaposes euphoric optimism with a nightmarish undertone of clouded judgement. Underneath hypnotic Elizabeth Fraser-esque vocals is a spaced dream-pop landscape with piercing guitar tones, ghostly synth currents and shimmering key flourishes.
Untied follows with a melodic bass line, tying together free moving rhythm guitar with pronounced surges of synth and full-toned drums. Over the uplifting backdrop, ASTER’s lyrics express feelings of abandonment, lacking control and frustration—building uneasiness in the song until an emotive climax through a powerful vocal performance.
Following at a softer pace is Kelvingrove, an homage to Glasgow, where ASTER is re-living a distorted past in search for familiarity. Cinematic strings, intricate lead synth and an unrestrained vocal performance expose a vulnerability in experiencing past trauma. Kelvingrove carries a sentiment of closure for the things that were, an acceptance of their place and distance.
The closing track sees a new collaboration between ASTER and Stranded (Optimo Music, UK; Homage, NYC, USA), bringing a sense of finality to the EP while re-imagining the opener, Unaware Bliss. Stranded describes this new output as ‘Cocteau Disco’, a hybrid of embellished melodic outpourings and driving four-to-the-flour disco rhythms.
There We Were, In A Frame, displays the depth of ASTER’s accomplished songwriting artistry. Mirroring ASTER’s individual resolve found through the catharsis of writing and producing these songs, is the collective resolve we have all been forced to find living through these strange times.
